There are plenty of opportunities to make a good living cultivating premium cocoa in the West Indian island of Dominica, where the soil and climate are ideal. But the heirs to the smallholdings, having had the opportunity of education, look down on farming, and yearn for white-collar jobs, which the small island can’t provide.

The answer, devised by the enterprising Cocoa Growers Association, is to upgrade the status of cocoa farming by offering school leavers college courses in cocoa production and marketing, ultimately expanding the production and export of cocoa, enriching the island’s economy, benefiting the community, and providing delicious chocolate for us all.
