In Rwanda, where arable land is scarce and animal fodder expensive, hydroponics give a lifeline. In a 20x10ft green house, seeds sprout from nutrient rich solutions in trays without soil. Needing no anti-biotics, hormones, pesticides or herbicides, and less than 2% of water needed for conventional green grass, it takes just 8 days to produce 50 kilos of fodder. Give a village a hydroponic kit, and they can produce enough nourishing feed for 20 cows and 120 goats, so plenty for their livestock and surplus to sell.
