- π Specialist eye surgeons trained in West Africa
- ποΈ Improved treatment for cataracts, glaucoma, and retinal disease
- π Thousands of patients accessing high-quality eye care locally
Across West Africa, millions of people live with visual impairment or blindness – much of it preventable or treatable. Yet access to specialist eye care is limited, and many patients cannot afford to travel abroad for treatment.
Through the Good Gifts catalogue, the Train an African Eye Surgeon gift supports advanced surgical training at specialist eye surgery training centres in Africa. Surgeons from across the region receive intensive, high-quality training in procedures such as cataract surgery, glaucoma treatment, and retinal care, combining online learning with hands-on surgical skills.
Since opening, the LIEC has trained dozens of ophthalmologists who are now providing specialist care in their home countries. Surgeons report fewer complications, improved outcomes, and the confidence to treat patients who would previously have gone blind. Many also go on to train colleagues, creating a powerful ripple effect that multiplies the impact of each trained surgeon.
As a result, tens of thousands more patients are now receiving sight-saving treatment close to home – often for the first time.
Training one eye surgeon does far more than help individual patients. It strengthens health systems, builds local expertise, and ensures that life-changing eye care is available in West Africa, by West Africans, for West Africans.
Your gift of surgical training helps restore sight, dignity, and independence to people across the region.
This gift was delivered in partnership with Moorfields Lions Korle Bu Trust (MLKBT), improving access to specialist eye care across West Africa
