For many refugee women, cycling is a skill they never had the chance to learn. Without it, getting around a new city can be slow, expensive, and isolating, limiting access to services, opportunities, and the chance to explore and connect. Through Good Gifts, Pedal power helps women refugees and asylum seekers learn to cycle in a welcoming group, then build real-life experience on the road with a Bike Buddy. Along the way, women gain skills, confidence, and connections with others in their community.
Parniyan arrived in London from Afghanistan with her husband and their young son, Salar. She had never ridden a bike before, but dreamed that the family could travel and explore together. So she signed up to learn with Pedal Power, and was soon riding with confidence.
Today, cycling has transformed the family’s daily life. They travel easily, affordably, and happily, and parks and riversides have become their favourite places to be. Salar now has a balance bike of his own, and Parniyan hopes cycling will give him a lifelong love of exploring the world. As she puts it, “It’s more than transport, it’s confidence, freedom and a sense of belonging.”

Learning to cycle does more than teach a new skill. It gives women the freedom to go where they choose, the confidence to take on new challenges, and a stronger sense of home. This gift was delivered in partnership with The Bike Project, which refurbishes donated second-hand bikes and gives them to refugees and people seeking asylum, alongside cycling lessons and Bike Buddy support to help them ride with confidence.
