For many people supported by Cambridge Cyrenians, day-to-day life can feel isolating and uncertain. But twice a week, something quietly remarkable takes place on six plots of Cambridge soil: people come together to dig, plant, tend and grow – and in doing so, they grow too.

Cambridge Cyrenians runs a community allotment as part of its support for people experiencing homelessness. The allotment offers far more than fresh produce – it provides structure, a sense of purpose, and the chance to learn practical skills in a supportive outdoor environment.

Thanks to generous donations through Good Gifts, Cambridge Cyrenians can keep these sessions running consistently and purchase the seeds, tools and supplies needed to maintain the allotment throughout the year.

Whether it’s sowing seeds in spring, harvesting vegetables in summer, or preparing the soil for the season ahead, every session gives participants a reason to show up, connect with others, and take pride in something they have helped to create.

Regular access to the allotment helps participants build routine, friendships, and resilience – three things that are often disrupted when someone is experiencing homelessness or personal crisis. Working outdoors, learning to grow food, and contributing to a shared project supports mental wellbeing, reduces isolation, and builds practical skills that can make a lasting difference.
