- 🎁 Support provided for one school food growing project
- 👩👩👧 28 children fed a nutritious meal every single day
- 💡 Improved food security and nutrition for young learners in an under-resourced community
Onke Mkhuzo is a teacher at an Educare Centre in a severely under-resourced community in Franschhoek, where families struggle daily with poverty. Many cannot afford the full monthly education fee of R350. Determined to help, Onke reduced the fee by half – and turned to the earth to find a sustainable solution for his students’ nutrition.
After participating in the Soil for Life Food Growing Programme and receiving a booster pack of start-up garden materials, Onke applied his new skills to create a thriving garden at his own centre. He tends it with care, working patiently alongside his ‘little helpers’ every step of the way.
Today, that patch of land is a vibrant source of sustenance that ensures 28 children are fed a healthy meal every day.
“His love for the garden and children is tangible. You see it in the tender loving care he pours into his garden and the kindness and patience he shows to his ‘little helpers’.”
— Soil for Life Trainer
Onke’s garden has provided a reliable, sustainable source of fresh, naturally grown vegetables for the centre’s daily meals. By reducing the financial burden on families while improving the nutritional intake of his students, his dedication has promoted both health and educational accessibility in his community.
Your support is helping dedicated teachers like Onke grow a healthier, more food-secure future for children in need.
This gift was delivered in partnership with Soil for Life, a non-profit organisation that empowers people to grow their own nutritious food and build healthy soil to promote health, dignity, and independence.
