At Good Gifts, every gift tells a story of hope, resilience and positive change. As we continue developing our new website, we’ve been thinking carefully not only about what stories we tell – but also how we tell them.
That’s why we’re beginning a gradual transition towards using hand-drawn illustrations across the Good Gifts website, consistent with our much-loved original cartoons, alongside AI-generated imagery for many of our new impact case studies.
The move is about much more than aesthetics. While the new illustrations bring a warm, distinctive and consistent visual identity to Good Gifts, they also help address important ethical and practical considerations around photography.
Why We’re Making the Change
Many charities and community organisations face increasing challenges around:
- Data privacy and protection
- Consent management
- Image licensing and ownership
- Safeguarding vulnerable individuals
- Long-term storage and reuse permissions
- The ethical use of photography, particularly involving children and vulnerable communities
In some contexts, taking and sharing photographs can unintentionally expose individuals or create concerns around dignity, safety or future use of images.
By moving towards illustration-led storytelling and carefully created AI-generated case study imagery, we can:
- Better protect privacy and identity
- Reduce safeguarding and consent concerns
- Avoid complex licensing restrictions
- Create greater consistency across the website
- Illustrate stories sensitively and respectfully
- Represent impact without relying solely on identifiable photography
A Consistent Good Gifts Style
Our new hand-drawn illustration style also helps create a clearer and more recognisable Good Gifts identity.
Across the website, supporters will begin to see a more unified visual approach – combining warmth, simplicity and storytelling to reflect the spirit of meaningful giving.
For our impact case studies, AI-generated imagery allows us to bring stories to life creatively while ensuring individuals are represented respectfully and appropriately, especially where real photography may not be available or suitable.
Putting Ethics and Storytelling Together
Photography will still continue to play an important role in many areas of our work and partner communications. But as the digital landscape evolves, we believe it’s important to develop approaches that balance powerful storytelling with privacy, dignity and responsible communications practices.
We’re excited about this next chapter for Good Gifts and look forward to continuing to share the stories behind the gifts – in ways that are thoughtful, creative and ethically grounded.
