In Africa and Asia, 60,000 people, mainly children, die of rabies each year. The threat comes largely from domestic dogs and can be totally prevented. Campaigns for the vaccination of domestic dogs in Tanzania, Malawi and Kenya have shown that vaccinating 70% of village dogs is sufficient to wipe out rabies in humans. Imagine, at an average cost of £2 per dog with, say, 150 dogs per village, it could do for rabies in humans what humans have done for smallpox.
