In South Sudan and Northern Uganda, obstacles prevent girls from going to school. Disapproving fathers have to be coaxed to allow girls to be educated. And girls walking to school risk sexual abuse. ‘School Mothers’ liaise with families, escort the girls to and from school and encourage them (even arranging for girls to return to the classroom in cases of early marriage). School Mothers’ greatest achievement? Drop-out rates for girls are 50% down. Education is the key to future economic independence in this patriarchal society.
