Starting school is a difficult experience, particularly confusing when teachers don’t speak your language. That is the fate of Masai children in Kenya, and explains the high drop- out rate. Research shows that, in their first 3-4 years of schooling, children need to be taught in their mother tongue, and crucially they need simple story books. (The Masai had no written language, so there is an acute shortage of written material.) Give Masai children the gift of literacy, so they can cope with the wider world.
